Goal Setting Techniques

Right now, I don’t have the words in my vocabulary to tell you hust how passionate I am about setting goals!  My goals have never been so clearly set in all my life as they are now and I am starting to feel the pull from them already.

As goal setting is so very important to development, I thought I’d share some techniques on setting goals that I have had success with.   I heard early on how important goal-setting was but I didn’t really grasp it as it’s not easy to sit down and write a list of goals, it goes deeper than that.  There are many ways to set your goals and many more effective ways than just listing your goals.

Goal setting is a powerful tool to acheiving your dreams, it adds focus and clarity to your aims and leaves you with a real sense that you will achieve all that you have set.  The beauty of achieving goals is the growth you will go through to achieve the goals.  Achieving a goal is a beautiful icing on the cake, however the best part are the changes you go through to achieve, you will have to stretch, change and grow to achieve your goals or else you would have achieved them already.  The stretching you go through strengthens your self-esteem and makes you more aware of your potential, therefore enabling you to achieve anything you desire as you have the tools to do what you want, be who you want, get what you want.  I’m talking about mental tools yeah….:)

Right let’s get down to some techniques.  You do not have to do the following all at the same time, you can break it down in bite-size pieces.  I did about 30 minutes a day for around a month, maybe more.  Everyone has 30 minutes a day to achieve their dreams, surely! Get as anal as you like about this, this could be the single most important step you ever take in your life.  I got a smart booklet and pen before transferring it to computer.  Remember to stay open to new techniques even if you don’t see how they will work.  Just suspend belief and have a go, what exactly do you have to lose?  Switch that around for a sec and think what you could gain…..

  1. List 50 things you want in the next 10 years.  Think of your age now and your age 10 years ago.  Are you where you thought you’d be?  What about the next 10 years, how old will you be then?  What do you want to be, have, do, achieve between now and then, which countries do you want to go to? What do you want to learn?  Anything and absolutely everything, really go for it. This gets you dreaming and you may find it difficult to think of 50 things to start with, but as the juices flow you may find it hard to stop at 50 so keep going!I’m currently 29 and in 10 years time will be approaching my 40th birthday.  I can choose now how I will go into my 40th year, with excitement or with regrets - I’ll take excitement please!
  2. List your life into the areas which make you whole, the areas that are important to you and your life.  For me it’s family, friends, career, money, spirituality, knowledge and health.  Under each area, list what is important to you, eg under work it may be “high income” or “giving value”.On the list, mark the most important ones and then mark differently the ones that you currently do not have.  You should be able to see from this which areas need the most work as well as the areas that you are happy with right now.   This insight also gives helps you to prioritise areas to work on
  3. Now take each area and imagine how you would like it to be ideally, make a statement in the present tense that encapsulates that.  Eg - money “I have financial freedom because I earn my money in a way that I am passionate about, enjoy wonderful experiences, pay all my bills in full ahead of time, save and have plenty left over for fun.”Then make a list of the milestones you will pass on your way to living that statement, eg “I start my own gardening business”.From the milestones, make a list of the daily or regular work you will do to achieve the milestones “I find the best legal sturcture for my business, I devise marketing strategy to build up client base”.  These milestones become your goals as you know that achieving them leads you to your ultimate goal.
  4. For each milestone, give reasons for wanting to achieve them.  Giving reasons gives your goal purpose and meaning which therefore gives your goal more pull.  To quote Jim Rohn “As the why gets stronger, the how gets easier”.
  5. Go through your milestones and write a list of what could block you from achieving your goals.  This part is very interesting and you may find it’s only a few recurring blocks, but what I found astonishing for me was how much a few blocks kept me from achieving my goals and dreams.
  6. Once you have your blocks, write down what you could do to overcome them - these could become additional milestones.  Why have you not overcome them before? (Great question, answer truthfully and honestly)
  7. Plan rewards for achieving a each milestone.  These rewards could be anything that makes you feel good, a book, a plant, a holiday - it’s up to you.
  8. Every day ensure you do 3/4/5 things from your daily/regular work list that leads you closer to your goals.  Pick a number you are happy with that is not a cop out and commit to it.  Constant input will take you closer to your dreams so daily work is necessary.
  9. Make it pretty.  Make it into a smart document that you can refer to often. This is an important piece if work and it should be treated as so.
  10. Constantly re-evaluate the document.  As you grow you may want to add new milestones, tweak your statements, add or remove your daily/regular tasks. This is on-going and the only thing certain is that you will change so let the document grow with you.
  11. Enjoy - this is fun!  I don’t know how long it will take you to achieve your dreams so please enjoy the journey.

These are really working for me right now but I will continue to try new techniques as I hear of them and share with you.  I’d suggest anyone try these techniques and let me know how you get on.  Happy goal-setting…

Love, light and abundance x x x
