The Power of Staying Present
I’ve been actively working on staying present and after a rocky start have found my groove. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do but never felt the inspiration or inclination to tackle. Following the progress made in other areas of my spiritual growth, space became available for me to focus on being present. As much as I didn’t understand how it would benefit me, one thing I’ve learned along the way is that I don’t have all the answers so it’s best to stay open. So off I ventured into the Now.Â
Kick-starting being present
I won’t lie, I had great difficulty fully grasping the concept. I had just embarked on a 90 day challenge and for the life of me couldn’t work out how to achieve my goals and stay present, the two seemed paradoxical! I had set myself these huge goals to reach and at the same time I was working on staying present - I was confused. I would have moments of being present but deep down they were unsustainable as I couldn’t see how I could reach my goals in this way. However, I was experiencing lots of synchronicity with the topic of being present popping up all over the place, so I kept on.
Understanding being present
Contrary to my original belief, staying present is not the opposite to taking action, the two in fact go hand-in-hand. Staying present is very powerful in that it enables you to take the best action. It also has a wonderful effect on the law of attraction as your point of power for manifestation is Now.  Being present with all your thoughts and feelings helps you exert stronger intentions to your manifestations by increasing your consciousness while creating. When you stay in the moment you deal with every thought and emotion as they arise. Having raised awareness means you can move away from being a slave to your thoughts and feelings to choosing whether to embrace or release them.Â
My inner control freak reared it’s head at one point resulting in me give up on staying present and reverting to 100% taking action.  This future-focussed strategy led to the predicatable effects of anxiety, stress and general uncomfort.  On reaching a state of burnout, I surrendered, I knew I wasn’t going about things in the best way so went back to basics and trusted.  How I love the usual development fun and games!
I was reading “The Power of Now” by Eckhart Tolle and was thoroughly enjoying it. I found it very easy to read and full of information on how to stay present. The format is great, almost interactive as all the “yeah but” questions that pop into your head are scattered throughout the book with answers so after a period of time it all starts to sink in. As I was in surrender mode, I figured it as good a time as any to slip into the present.  An important part of being present is you only do things you want to do and the things you should do fall away guilt-free.
I stopped taking overt action towards my goals and made meditation and gentle yoga the only things I commited to doing. I made a conscious effort to watch my thoughts without judgement and pulled myself up whenever I felt I was slipping into the past or future. Tolle made the present sound so delightful that I really wanted to be there, the feelings he wrote of came almost instantly. I also encountered a little help along the way in discovering Easy World.
Benefits of staying present
The irony is that I now feel closer to my goals, despite taking a few weeks off! My running was starting to go downhill as I wasn’t feeling good and I could feel it was a mental rather than physical issue. I was in the future and I wasn’t enjoying it but am now getting back into it with full effect as my mindset is 100 times better, the same applies for the weight.Â
Amazingly, I have made huge strides forward in my bid for financial freedom. I have an extremely clear picture of what I am to do and have removed a revenue stream I’ve realised I don’t want to do, and with it a huge amount of pressure. I now have 3 viable revenue streams, all of which I love and am capable of doing. Staying present has enabled me to take giant steps towards living my dream life, bigger steps than 100% taking action and being future-focussed could have. Some of the benefits I feel are:
- Instant peace and ease - It’s literally instant and it feels great
- More accelerated movement towards my goals - I’ve moved more in 2 weeks by effectively doing nothing than lots of doing something would have resulted in.
- Being more accepting of myself - Being present involves being with yourself warts and all. You tend to move away from judgement and everything simply “just is“
- Being nicer to myself- It has helped me to be gentler to myself by hearing any negative talk as it arises
- Less fluctuating moods - Being more aware in every moment leads to a calmer, stable temperament. You spot the mood before it comes and even if it comes, you feel it, you do not let it control you.
- Acceptance of situations, emotions and feelings - You become an impartial observer, everything “just is“
- Greater clarity of mind - Being present stills the mind like meditation, a side effect is a clearer mind. Suddenly things you have been pondering, consciously or subconsciously, are resolved with ease.Â
- Feeling of increased time - Suddenly there’s more time. For me it’s the removal of a revenue stream. The time I used to work on it now becomes new added time. Also, when you are savouring every moment time slows down.
- Easier manifestations - More awareness of thoughts and feelings = easier manifestations
- Generally feeling more positive without mania - I feel more positive but without any overwhelming excitement. Staying present helps you not to hold on to all emotions, whether you percieve them as good or bad. Holding on to a feeling also holds on to the opposite feeling, just being is observing and accepting all feelings and letting them pass.

One book which I enjoyed is “The Present” by Spencer Johnson. Very powerful and talks about the greatest present which is being present.
