How blogging affects your personal development

I’ve been blogging properly since March 2007 and considering it probably 2 years previous.  I truly love it and generally just get on with it, but Darren Prowse’s 31 days to building a better blog series led me to reflect on my blogging experiences until now.

There are parellels between what I’ve learned while blogging and what I am finding with life and although I blog on presonal growth, I would recommend blogging to all as no matter the topic, you will grow in ways you never have before.

Here are some of my learning points:

Initial overwhelm is normal

I’m a quick learner, like writing and like to get stuck in to whatever I am involved in.  My initial step into the blogging world was like stepping into a whole new world where everyone spoke a different language!  I was met with words like ftp server, plug-ins, akismet, pings and trackbacks.  How was I ever to master all this information I wondered?  However, with a little help from forums and my good friend Google, you can pretty much find out anything nowadays.

Starting something new can be daunting as everything is unknown, but you have to start somewhere as staying in the unknown is not a beneficial option.  Step-by-step it starts to sink in and it’s amazing how different things seem after a good night’s sleep.

Patience is king

The saying patience is a virtue never did it for me. Probably because you always hear it when you are at your least patient!  Patience in blogging is important as it takes time to learn the ropes, for your traffic to increase, to get your name recognised in your niche, to build up solid content, to learn about marketing and monetization strategies and so on.

Without patience it will take you a whole lot longer to master all these new concepts.  Even the top bloggers didn’t get to where they are overnight, you need to exercise patience and…..

Enjoy the ride

Your no.1 motivation for blogging must be enjoyment, all else comes 2nd to that.  Money, recognition, fame - they’re all by-products of doing something you love well, not your overiding motivation.  If your intention isn’t the best one from the beginning, you will feel frustration, anxiety, irritation and various other emotions which stop you enjoying your journey.

So just as in life, you will have greater success from engaging in your passions than blatantly chasing the dollar!  The dollar will come, just succeed in your passions - simple as that.

It’s good to share

Since I have shared my experiences and received positive feedback from doing so, my own development ahs moved on leaps and bounds.  The benefits from sharing are unlimited and practically all the successful bloggers share an abundance of information and tips with their readers.

Most bloggers want the best for people, which is why they blog on something they know about which will help others.  I am in the process of incorporating a lot more complimentary information to this blog so don’t miss out and subscribe to my feed.

Being held accountable

Blogs hold you accountable to what you say you want or will do.  Something about putting it out there to the world, adds an extra incentive to get things done.  It’s not pressure, it’s a nice feeling, one that propels you forward to greater achievement.

Different to telling well-meaning family and friends, who do not always support you in the best way, your blog readers offer support and information that can help you along the way.

There are lots of amazing, knowledgeable people out there

When you watch the news or observe people it can seem as though we are the only sane ones living in a crazy world.  Blogging opens you up to a global community of likeminds, inspiration and knowledge.  Blogs are gateways to other blogs and you never know what you will find, but you will love it.

How has blogging helped you to develop?

Love, light and abundance x x x

Blogging has helped me in two ways.

One, I am more clued into what is happening around the world.

Two, it has exposed me to more opinions that I would not heard otherwise.

    Lola,

Congratulations on your blog. You came to my attention as a fellow spiritual blogger.

Blogging about spirituality is now my full-time job, my career, my life purpose, and passion. It has changed my life.

Just wanted to leave you a note of encouragement.

Thanks for the link to 31 Days… I just started blogging a few weeks ago and am sure I will find it invaluable.

As for what I’ve learned… so far, the learning has been primarily to cement in or more effectively articulate some of the things I’ve been feeling and going through.

I used to practice martial arts, and my instructors always encouraged us to also pursue teaching. They said that teaching others was the best way to actually learn… and they were right.

Hopefully, in guiding others with some of the topics on my blog I will indeed learn more about myself and my path.

I think you’re right here. It’s rare that you see people talking about the pure enjoyment and rewarding nature of blogging.

Usually they just tell you to “stick with it.” It’s not as inspiring!

    Hi Lola!

How has blogging helped me develop? Well, I’d say that I’m still developing, I’m not done yet! :) I’d say that especially when it comes to patience, I’m still learning every day about that.

Keep up the great work here!
