How to make personal spiritual development impact your career and business
As ironic as this sounds, I get a lot of inspiration from E! Entertainment channel. They regularly run shows such as “The highest earning women of 2006” and “Top 10 hip-hop moguls”, ultimately these are successful people and I love success!
I recently watched “Society Girls”, which featured some of the top US society girls like Donald Trump’s daughter. They showed us that they do not spend their days shopping and lunching but have their own empires they have built or are building. Now these empires looked like fun to build indeed and when the narrator said “Contrary to what people think, these girls work hard. While most people have jobs to pay the bills, these girls have jobs that are extensions of themselves”. Err hello, isn’t that how it’s supposed to be?
Well yes, I know that, readers of my blog know this as do my fellow PD bloggers but most people don’t. The thought of your business or career being an extension of you is a ludicrous concept for some but not for me, so let’s look at how we can do this:
Authentic at work?
Most people’s thoughts about work are “work’s gotta be done” and “gotta pay the bills”. So where does that thinking get us? Not far actually. The attitude is wrong unless you desire pain and sacrifice. The thought of being authentic at work is inconceivable, but it’s what a majority of successful people do.
Question: What stops you from bringing all of you to work? What are you scared of?
Putting on your work hat
Most people put on their work hat or worse, switch off part of their brain before they enter the building – ouch! Ever thought that if you need to be another person at work, you’re probably in the wrong place? Most figure they will make it work by adapting (or suppressing) themselves to fit in, instead of finding (or better still, creating) somewhere that fits in with you.
When you try and make it work by becoming another person for work, the armour caused by inauthenticity comes on and eventually you will identify with this armour leaving you unfulfilled and dissatisfied. Eventually you will be heading for a situation where you will eventually have to “find yourself” or stay destined for a life of discontent.
Question: Which part of you do you leave out of your work persona?
Get back in touch with you
If you are not being authentic at work and are leaving a lot of you out of work, you need to get back in touch with you. You may not know who you are, so have fun finding out.
Who are you? What are your values?
Who are you really? Not what your friends, family or society expects of you. What brings you pleasure. You may think you do not know who you are, but I believe you do deep inside. It’s just a little noisy in there but it’s there amongst the noise. When you find it, it probably won’t be a surprise to you, just something you may have disregarded or put on a back burner for now.
An exercise to get you started is to revisit a time, place or situation where you were truly happy. Visualise this place and really get into the feelings. Write down where you were, how you felt, who was there etc and re-read. What words spring to mind? Freedom, fun, social, active, music, bright, sea – anything, they do not need to be conventional values but whatever’s important to you. Then find the resonant words in your list. Where are these words showing up in your life right now? This is a good starting point, if you are serious I would recommend working with a coach.
Unite you with your career
All of you should turn up for work and play. At work you must be professional in whatever way that means for your career but not repressed. Keeping work you and play you completely separate means somewhere you are not honouring the real you. Once you are on your way to discovering who you are and your values, think about how all (or most) of you can show up at work.
Question: How can you I honour my values in my work?
Make work an extension of you
We’ve got to do some kind of work, even if you don’t need the money you need some way to pass the time and give something back. Work that is an extension of you doesn’t feel like work – happy days! How can you make work an extension of you? Well armed with the knowledge of who you really are and what your values are you are half-way there. It may involve bringing all of you to work and seeing what happens or finding a new job or business that truly honours you. There could be an amazing service that you could offer that people need. The chances of you succeeding working this way is higher and you have a well-trodden path of genuine entrepreneurs to follow.
Question: What’s my passion? How can I make it a success for me?
What needs work?
What recurrent issues come up at work and play, seeing as they both involve you it will usually be the same ones. Eg, at home aggression may mean a quick temper and at work you may feel it an inappropriate trait so you suppress it and silently stew. Work on getting to the root of your aggression as well as your communication, as expressing yourself constructively could alleviate any frustration that could lead to aggression.
As you start to live more authentically, plenty of resistance will pop up so you will start to notice issues that have hijacked your progress previously and can address them as and when.
Work on it
Once you have identified areas to address, start to work on them. Read books, do courses and seminars, get a coach do whatever works for you as how much difference will this make to your life if these areas lose their power over you. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.
In love, light and abundance x x x
