Illusions Part Two: The deception of work

In my opinion the biggest con I have ever witnessed is the concept of work.  Don’t get me wrong I am not against people working or having careers, it’s the vast illusion of the motivations behind work that have me flummoxed.  Once I woke from the brainwashed state I realised how laughable these lies were and how, once looked a objectively, they didn’t actually make any sense.

People work for money, so they can pay their bills, have holidays, a nice car etc.  It’s a way to spend some time and hell, practically everyone else works so it appears normal to view work this way.  But how many people love what they do?  I’m a believer that everyone has a purpose and to experience joy in your career you have to discover how you can align it with your purpose.  The money then becomes a by product of doing what you love but you probably make more than you do working simply for money.

There is a huge amount of collective programming around work, it is so ingrained into our collective consciousness as a society that it seems to be the truth. But it’s not the truth, it is simply deep rooted societal beliefs that we give so much energy to that in turn we co-create it.  We mistakenly think our beliefs are caused by the situation when in fact it is the other way around.  Let’s lift the lid on some of these beliefs:

Job security

This in itself is an oxymoron.  It’s fine to have a job but let’s not fool ourselves into thinking it gives you security.  Most people would only be able to survive for 2 months without pay if they lost their job, how is that secure?

You have to sacrifice for success

I personally have issues with the word sacrifice, my interpretation has got me into a lot of trouble over the years.  Yes you have to put in to get out, but that doesn’t mean you have to go without.  Bearing in mind you get what you expect, this belief brings you nothing but despair, pain and lack.  You do not have to do without anything unless you choose to, you can have it all if you wish.

Living for the weekend

How many times do we hear “Roll on Friday”? How can anything that makes you wish your life away be good for you.   Time is too precious a resource to be filled with things you dislike especially due to the amount of time spent on careers.

Identity

We’ve all met people that are their work.  Their work defines them and if they lost their job they feel as if they have lost their identity.  If you do not know who you are, a job will not help you with that, it’s simply burying the problem.  Being dependant on something outside of yourself for your identity is a recipe for disaster.  Want to find out who you are? Come see me for some coaching ;).

All great points! Too often we live to work and not work to live.
